Again, I agree. I think it had more to do with addressing concerns raised about Federal military encroachment on States’ Rights during the Constitutional Convention and the State-by-State urges for Ratification. Concentrated central power was a big concern in those post-Revolution days, or so I’ve read. The push for the 2nd Amendment appears to have risen out of the fear of a future standing U.S. Army. Interesting point: We still do have a vestige of the State Militia (which originated here in colonial Mass.). We call it the National Guard … Federalized since 1903, I believe. So, how d’ya like them apples?

I’m no scholar of the 2d amendment but the language you cite has always seemed telling to me. it was a vastly different world but having read the Federalist and the Debates on the constitution and recognizing the wisdom of the leading Founders I find it hard to believe they would favor our current gun culture. or the money in politics that permits it.

I think that goes for all of us, Professor. However, the words that lead the the text of the 2nd Amendment (“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, …”) provides some insight into their thoughts and intentions regarding the words that immediately follow withing the very same … and only … sentence in the 2nd Amendment.

I’m rather poor at reading the minds of white men (no women or Black men) who have been dead for 200 years, but since I’m well acquainted with the Founding I’d guess they’d be aghast at a democracy in such pusillanimous thrall to a moneyed interest that it allows access to weapons like the Bushmaster to the mentally ill, criminals, and terrorists.

The six year olds at Sandy Hook were going to do what, pull AK-47s out of their pencil boxes and defend themselves and our great Constitution?

Here is a little update for you from a story posted today and titled “Globe 100 honors top 100 Massachusetts companies”

The founding fathers would be shocked at the assaults on the 2nd Amendment since 1960. The problem with regressive socialists is that they do not have the courage to defend themselves or their families. Instead, they choose to rely on an all powerful nanny state to perform the basic and fundamental obligation of all free men, i.e., to protect and defend themselves and our great Constitution from all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

I was briefly “a progressive resident of the Palmetto state” and I can tell you with a high degree of confidence that you are waaaay too close to the race in question to see it objectively. While Republican-lite is a very weak approach, running as a progressive Democrat would NOT have resulted in a win for ECB. Your apparent belief that the polls accurately reflected the “state of the race” is misguided. The polls reflected the media narrative, not the actual “score” at the time.
